Mixed-media on paper (c. 1989). An old French stone farmhouse just visible through the trees; at mid-ground a cultivated field, the rows of crops abundant with flower and vegetable. This is more evocation than depiction. It is late summer, and such is the abundance that all colours are now harmoniously blurred, a serene whole, the individual elements, the plants and farmer's house, only hinted at by quick pen sketches on the underlying colour. This is Piper at his most lyrical.
