Tessellation Monsters! (4th)

The first project that I decided to do with my 4th graders was a tessellation project. On day one we looked at a powerpoint I put together that looked at the Dutch artist M.C. Escher (no -- not M.C. Usher kids -- M.C. Escher) ;) We began by looking at a variety of his work including "Drawing Hands" and "Relativity" (they LOVED these pieces) as well as his tessellation art. We defined a "tessellation" as being "a pattern created with a repeating shape that does not overlap and could go on…

kindergarten patterns/textured trees

This project was done almost at the end of our second quarter. Oh how they have improved since the beginning of the year! We viewed many photos of different kinds of trees and discussed the texture and patterns. We drew a horizon line and then I instructed them on how to draw trees and branches. We drew in pencil first and then they traced over the trees with a permanent marker. Next they drew with a permanent marker patterns on the trees. They used construction paper crayons to color in the…

Opening the kiln today was so exciting, because this little group of "hoot owls" (as my grandma used to say) were so full of personality. Looking at photos…
