This Solutions poster is designed to aide students in understanding that solutions are special mixtures. Once substances are combined, they cannot be separated. Students should also understand that when a substance is dissolved, the substance does not disappear. The substance is there and students c...

Today we mixed! Students were given 8 different mixtures to make in class. They had to decided if the mixtures were solutions or not. If something dissolved, it was a solution. I would say the kids had fun doing this. Of course, it wouldn't be safe if we didn't wear our goggles to do this experiment! :) We also learned ANOTHER song! I told the kids we would sing a new song for every topic they learned this year...little did I know, I would become a songwriter! There just aren't too many…

Do you ever have one of those lessons that makes your students say, "This is the best day EVER!!" Well, that was my science lesson today. We have been studying matter for the past six weeks, and the final standard to master was about mixtures and solutions. Luckily, I have some amazing parents who love to donate to the cause! I sent home a note a week ahead of time (and allowed a weekend in that time frame because, let's face it, who can get to the store during the week?) and asked if they…

great unit on mixtures and solutions - solution if can be separated, solution if can't. Children separate components, graph, compare with each other (collate for a class graph)

We had a "smashing" time learning about metamorphic rock! Not only did we learn that metamorphic rock is formed by a rock undergoing massive heat and pressure, we also got a little snack! We observed our rock..(ahem..snickers!) and drew a picture of it. After that, we applied tons of heat and pressure to our poor little rock..(ahem..snickers!) and watched it transform into something that looked very different that when we started! We squeezed our rock, put a book on our rock, stood on our…
