Aluminium extrusions can be welded. It is common on high end mountain bikes. But it is difficult to do well. Why? Simply because aluminium has a very low melting point and become weak with heat.
A nice set of aluminium extrusions with different profiles. Unless the end of an extrusion is not seen they often have some sort of end cap - maybe a casting or an injection moulded piece of plastic. Note the right hand extrusion has a channel for a panel and the small c-shaped central section to take a screw.
