Claudia Gordon, the first deaf African American female attorney in the U.S., has been an advocate for people with disabilities since high school. It was her desire to address societal barriers faced by people with disabilities that motivated her to pursue a legal education and career. Since graduating from law school and being admitted to the Maryland Bar, Claudia has conducted numerous empowerment & legal education outreach and training to organizations in both the U.S. & St. Thomas USVI. Caroline Still Wiley Anderson, (Wm. Still's daughter) educator and physician, was born November 1, 1848 in Philadelphia, PA. In 1868, she graduated from Oberlin College, where she was the only black woman in her class, and returned to Philadelphia to teach. She later taught at Howard U. She became a medical doctor in 1878 the state’s first black female doctor. She ran the Berean Dispensary which served poor women and children. Berean Manual Training and Industrial School . Dr. Alexa Canady became the first African-American woman neurosurgeon in the United States in 1981. From 1987 to 2001, Canady was chief of neurosurgery at Children's Hospital of Michigan. In 1970, less than 10 percent of all medical students were women. By 1975, that number had jumped to just over 20 percent. Women now make up nearly half of all medical students. MARY JANE HOLMES SHIPLEY DRAKE was a central figure in an 1852 Slavery Case in which her father, a former Slave, successfully sued his former owner, Nathaniel Ford, for the FREEDOM of his three children, including Mary Jane.
