rising sun Ingredients 1 1⁄2 oz. mezcal 3⁄4 oz. fresh grapefruit juice 1⁄2 oz. fresh lime juice 1⁄2 oz. maraschino Pinch of salt Lime wheel, to garnish Instructions Combine mezcal, juices, and maraschino in a cocktail shaker filled with ice; shake vigorously and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with lime wheel.
Tequila didn’t play much of a role in the early years of the cocktail renaissance (the Añejo Highball, by the brass-rail elder statesman Dale DeGroff, being a notable exception). And mezcal, tequila’s rough-hewn relation, had none at all.
