The Red Rail (Aphanapteryx bonasia) is an extinct, flightless rail. It was endemic to the Mascarene island of Mauritius, east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. It had a close relative on Rodrigues island, the likewise extinct Rodrigues Rail, with which it is sometimes considered congeneric. Its relationship with other rails is unclear. Rails often evolve flightlessness when adapting to isolated islands, free of predators. Prehistoric, Palaeontology, Extinction, Big Bird, Lionel

The Glaucous Macaw (Anodorhynchus glaucus) is a large all blue South American parrot, a member of a large group of Neotropical parrots known as macaws. This macaw is critically endangered and generally believed to be extinct. It is closely related to the Lears Macaw A. leari and the Hyacinth Macaw A. hyacinthinus. In Guaraní, it was called guaa-obi after its vocalizations. If there are any left the population is assumed to be tiny (fewer than 50 individuals). Portrait
