Iraq: Bronze Star With Valor  He was the first Coast Guardsman to die in wartime action since the Vietnam War. Bruckenthal died along with two U.S. Navy sailors intercepting a waterborne suicide attack on the Khawr Al Amaya Oil Terminal off the coast of Iraq in the northern Persian Gulf. Bruckenthal was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart for his actions. Assigned to 93rd Air Refueling Squadron, Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington. Died when the KC-135 aircraft she was in crashed near Chon-Aryk, Kyrgyzstan while on a refueling mission for Afghanistan war operations. According to witnesses, the plane exploded twice in flight and broke into several pieces in midair. The cause of the crash is under investigation. He enlisted in the Army 3/31/42 & retired 12/31/74. He is a vet of WWII in Operation Husky, Battle of Salerno, Battle of Normandy & Operation Market-Garden. He is also a vet of Korean & Vietnam Wars.
