c1556 English noblewoman

c1556 this English noblewoman wears a purple gown and undersleeves (which have lost their width, and are now slim fitting) of a thinnish fabric. It is fashionably wrinkled across the bodice and sleeves indicating a very solid corset of metal or wood is being worn, there is no bustline. The skirt opening is edged with gold fabric studded with jewels. The neckline is very high showing the chemise/ruff; the black velvet partlet is purely for decoration (and will soon vanish from costume). The…

Mary Tudor: Renaissance Queen

Over a year ago I posted a rather simplistic account of the fashion of Mary I. Very little had been done on this subject except Alison J. Carter’s ‘Mary Tudor’s Wardrobe of Robes: Documentary and Visual Evidence of Mary’s Dress Style as Princess, 1516-1553, and as Mary I, Queen of England’, MA thesis., (Coutauld Institute of Art, 1983). Now there is a new study and one available online. It’s Hilary Doda, ‘Of Crymsen Tissue: The Construction of a Queen. Identity, Legitimacy and the Wardrobe…

Queen Mary I - 1553

An image of Mary Tudor as queen in 1553. The image is taken from a plea roll of the court of King’s bench, Michaelmas, 1553. Mary is enthroned and is assisted by angels. I’ve zoomed in only on Mary, however in the whole piece a number of events are depicted behind Mary. This includes the depiction of a flight of rebels, a reference to the failed attempt in July of that year, of a scheme to deny Mary’s succession to the throne and instead make Lady Jane Grey as queen. However Mary won…
